Seine Referendarzeitverbrachte er in Karlsruhe, Grötzingen und Bruchsal, danach war er Rechtsanwalt in Mannheim und im Justizdienst in Heidelberg tätig, später bei der zentralen Stelle der Landesjustizverwaltung in Ludwigsburg 1966 wurde er Justizrat und Notar in Pforzheim. 1968 erfolgte seine Wahl zum Stadtrat, wo er seit 1970 Vorsitzender der SPD-Fraktion war. Er war Mitglied im Hauptausschuss und Ältestenrat. 1973 wurde er zum Notariatsdirektor ernannt.
